Founded in Missoula in 2006. Built to fight for the people insurance companies try to shortchange.
James Caldwell spent his first five years practicing law defending insurance companies. He was good at it. He learned every tactic insurers use to reduce payouts — the lowball offers, the delays, the requests for recorded statements, the medical record disputes.
Then he started meeting the people on the other side. People who had been genuinely hurt, who had done everything right, and who were being systematically undervalued by billion-dollar insurance corporations. He started winning those cases too — using the same knowledge he'd built defending insurers.
In 2006, he left the defense side, founded Big Sky Injury Law, and hasn't looked back. Every attorney and staff member here shares the same conviction: Montana families deserve someone in their corner who knows exactly what the other side is planning.
"The best way to beat insurance companies is to know how they think. I spent five years learning that. Now I use it for the other side."
These aren't marketing phrases. They are the standards we hold ourselves to with every case, every client, every call.
We tell you the truth about your case — even when it's not what you hoped to hear. If we don't think you have a viable case, we'll tell you, explain why, and point you toward the right resources. We do not take cases we don't believe in.
Evidence fades. Witnesses move. We respond to every inquiry within 15 minutes during business hours because we know that speed matters in these cases. Our clients have direct access to their attorney — not a voicemail system.
We don't take early settlements to close cases quickly. We prepare every case as if it's going to trial, and insurers know it. That reputation is why we consistently recover amounts far above what clients were initially offered.
Every attorney at this firm grew up in Montana, went to school in Montana, and chose to build their career here. We know the roads, the communities, the local courts, and — most importantly — the people.
That matters in ways that are hard to quantify. A Missoula jury responds differently to a local attorney who knows this community than they do to outside counsel. Our relationships with local medical experts, accident reconstruction specialists, and economists give our clients advantages that out-of-state firms simply can't replicate.
We are active in the Missoula community: Tyler coaches UM Law School mock trial, Sarah sits on the board of the Montana Women Trial Lawyers Network, and James volunteers his time at the Missoula County Legal Aid clinic every quarter.
